Home / Glossary / F / Featured Snippet
The answer block Google shows above the organic results, taken from a page it has already indexed. Selected per query, not per page.

How a page wins one
Snippets reward a specific shape: the question as a heading, the answer immediately beneath it in roughly forty to sixty words, then the supporting detail. Lists and tables win their own snippet formats. Nothing about this requires more words, and padding usually loses the placement rather than winning it.
The phrasing sensitivity most people underestimate
Snippets are awarded per query, not per page. Our own data makes the point: we appear for five near-identical phrasings of the same question about snippets, and our position across them differs by fifteen places. Same subject, same page, materially different outcomes.
The practical consequence is that each phrasing is its own target. A page can hold the snippet for one wording and be absent from the first page for a wording that differs by a single article.
Is it still worth winning
Less than it was, and still yes. On queries where an AI answer block appears, the snippet is often absorbed into it. On queries where none appears, the snippet remains the most prominent position available, and it is the one place a lower-ranking page can outrank everything above it.
It is also a useful diagnostic. A page that wins snippets is a page whose structure machines can read, which is the same property that makes it quotable by an answer engine.
What it does to traffic
A snippet can satisfy the question entirely, so the clicks fall even as the visibility rises. Judge it on whether the brand is the one being read, not on sessions alone, and decide which of those you are buying before the work starts.
