Home / Glossary / A / AEO vs SEO
Not a choice between two things. SEO decides whether a page can be found at all; AEO decides whether its content can be extracted and reused in an answer.
We work on this: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
They are not alternatives
The question is usually framed as a budget choice. It is not one, because the two do different jobs in sequence. Search engine optimization decides whether a page can be found, crawled, indexed and ranked at all. Answer engine optimization decides whether the content on that page can be extracted and reused inside an answer.
A page that cannot be indexed cannot be cited. That ordering is not a matter of opinion, and it is why an AEO program bolted onto a site with unresolved technical problems tends to produce nothing.
What changes between them
The unit
SEO competes with pages. AEO competes with passages. One page can supply the answer to one question and be ignored for the next.
The measure
SEO is measured in rankings, impressions and clicks. AEO is measured in citations, mentions and share of voice.
The outcome
SEO brings someone to your site to find out. AEO means they were told before they arrived, if they arrive at all.
Where the budget question actually bites
The honest answer for most businesses is that the technical and structural work serves both, and the split only matters at the margin. Titles, headings, internal linking, structured data and a crawlable site are preconditions for one and raw material for the other.
The real divergence is off the site. Content you own has a ceiling, and past it the work moves to sources you do not control. That is a different discipline with a different cost base, and it is the point at which the two programs stop overlapping.
A test you can run today
Take a question your buyers ask. Search it, and look at what sits above the organic results. If an answer block is there and names competitors, ranking beneath it will not fix the problem. If there is no answer block, classic ranking and click-through work still applies, and it applies first.
